Freemie collection cups are some of the most affordable and easy-to-use collection cups on the market. Unfortunately, they don’t work with every breast pump out there, so it’s essential to know which ones they do work with before you decide to buy them.

Freemie collection cups are compatible with many of the most popular breast pump brands on the market, including Ameda, Baby Buddha, Bellababy, Lansinoh, Medela, Motif, Spectra, Lansinoh, and a few others. They also work with all Freemie breast pumps (source: Freemie).

In this article, I’ll break down not only which brands work with Freemie collection cups but also which particular models can use them, as well. I’ll also answer some other questions you may have about Freemie cups.

What Are Freemie Cups? Are They Worth It?

Freemie cups are lightweight, reusable breast pump collection cups that allow breastfeeding moms to pump hands-free while doing other things. They’re small enough to be worn under the clothes, meaning moms can pump anywhere, even if they’re around other people or on the move.

The traditional setup for pumping involves large, cumbersome bottles that are anything but convenient (image source: Wikimedia Commons).

Moms using this setup usually have to stay in one place and can’t do much other than pump. It’s also impossible to wear clothes over these bottles. Freemie cups, however, are small and have a convenient, bowl-like shape that fits snugly over the breasts and under the bra and shirt.

If you’re a breastfeeding mom, this shape allows you to wear and use the pump (hands-free!) beneath your clothes, and no one will be the wiser. Each cup holds up to 230 ml (7.8 oz) of milk for a total of 460 ml (15.6 oz) of milk if you’re double pumping (source: Freemie).

Aside from their shape and convenience, they work just like the bottles on a breast pump. You’ll hook them up to your pump’s tubing and turn on the pump. It does its thing, pumping the milk into the cups

Once you’re done or the cups are full, you’ll turn off the pump and remove them. They’re flat on the bottom, so you can place them on a flat surface without worrying about them tipping over and spilling.

Finally, you’ll pour the milk directly from the cup into whatever sanitized container you’re using to store it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions concerning Freemie cups

How Should I Empty and Clean My Freemie Cups?

To empty your Freemie cups, simply pour the milk directly from the cups into a sterilized bottle or freezer bag. To clean them, you’ll disassemble the parts and wash them with hot water and dish soap. You can also boil the cups to sanitize them.

Here are the step-by-step instructions on cleaning your Freemie cups

  1. Disassemble all the components of the pump, including the cups and tubing.
  2. Using hot water and dish detergent, hand wash the cups thoroughly, keeping them separate from other dishes at all times.
  3. Rinse them in hot water for at least ten seconds.
  4. Dry the cups thoroughly and store them in a non-refrigerated area away from other dishes.

Additionally, you can sanitize the cups at any time by wiping them down with isopropyl rubbing alcohol and boiling them (source: Freemie).

Can I Use Freemie Cups Whilst Lying Down?

You cannot use Freemie cups while lying down. Doing so makes it harder to pump, as milk needs to flow in a downward direction. Additionally, using Freemie cups while lying down or reclining can also cause the cups to leak, which can cause a mess that you will then have to clean.

Per the Freemie user manual, which you can view on Amazon, you should always use the Freemie cups in an upright position, such as sitting straight up or standing. The manual advises against using the cups while reclining, lying down, or bending forward (source: Amazon).

How To Stop Freemie Cups From Leaking

There could be several reasons your Freemie cups are leaking. Fixing the leak starts by determining the problem. First of all, when the cups first arrive, you should boil them for ten minutes. This simultaneously sanitizes the cups and prepares them for use, ensuring that they seal more tightly to your breasts and won’t leak.

If you boil the cups as directed and they still start to leak, check your bra first. Your bra should hold the cups as tightly against your breasts as your hands would hold them. If it doesn’t, milk could be leaking out around the edges.

Also, check for damages to the cups themselves. Did you drop them? Did someone step on them? If there are cracks, scratches, or other blemishes, leaks could occur.

If neither your bra nor the cups themselves seem to be the problem, you can try reboiling them (source: Freemie).

Are Freemie Cups Covered by Insurance?

While Freemie pumps are covered by insurance, the cups and other accessories usually aren’t covered by insurance. You can always talk to your insurance provider to double-check this fact. However, in most cases, you’ll have to purchase the Freemie cups out of pocket.

Can You Store Freemie Cups in the Fridge?

You should never store Freemie cups (whether assembled or not) in the refrigerator. The cold temperature inside the fridge isn’t good for the cups and can cause parts to loosen or stop working altogether. It can also undo the good done by the boiling, resulting in leaks (source: Freemie).

Instead of placing full cups in the fridge, pour the milk directly from the cups into a bottle or refrigerator- or freezer-safe container after you finish pumping.

Final Thoughts

I hope this guide was helpful and answered any questions you might have about Freemie cups and whether or not they’re compatible with your current breast pump. If you’re still unsure about them, you can always follow up with your doctor to see if they think Freemie cups are right for you.
